Background of the Study
Police extortion is a critical issue affecting the integrity of law enforcement and the efficacy of crime reporting systems. In Ife Central, Osun State, allegations of extortion by police officers have led to widespread public distrust and reluctance among citizens to report crimes. Such practices undermine the legitimacy of the police force and impede the accurate collection of crime data (Olaniyi, 2023). The phenomenon of extortion not only exacerbates the vulnerability of citizens but also creates a climate of fear and impunity among law enforcement officials. Researchers have noted that when victims perceive that reporting a crime may expose them to additional extortion, they are less likely to engage with formal judicial processes (Akinola, 2024). This dynamic disrupts the flow of critical information needed to effectively combat criminal activities and impairs the overall efficiency of the criminal justice system. Moreover, extortion practices can distort official crime statistics, making it challenging to design effective crime prevention strategies (Babatunde, 2025). This study explores the relationship between police extortion and crime reporting, aiming to uncover the underlying causes and propose mechanisms to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
Statement of the Problem
Ife Central Local Government Area is facing a serious dilemma where police extortion has adversely affected crime reporting. The practice of demanding bribes or other favors in exchange for police services has created an environment of mistrust between citizens and law enforcement (Olaniyi, 2023). This mistrust has resulted in underreporting of crimes, hindering effective police investigations and skewing crime statistics. The consequent lack of accurate data compromises the development of targeted crime prevention policies. In addition, extortion practices diminish the credibility of the police force, making it difficult for the community to seek justice. There is an urgent need to investigate the extent of police extortion and its impact on the willingness of citizens to report crimes, thereby informing policy reforms to rebuild trust (Akinola, 2024; Babatunde, 2025).

Implementing accountability measures will lead to increased crime reporting.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of police extortion and its negative impact on crime reporting in Ife Central. By investigating the dynamics of extortion, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations to restore public confidence in law enforcement. Improved crime reporting is essential for effective crime prevention and the overall integrity of the criminal justice system. The study’s insights will be valuable for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders in designing reforms to enhance transparency and accountability (Olaniyi, 2023; Akinola, 2024).
